5/16 Minor matters

Iowa had Wednesday off. The I-Cubs return to action Thursday, playing host to Tucson. Matt Garza is scheduled to start, making his fourth Minor League rehab start, second with Iowa.

Jair Fernandez hit his first home run in Tennessee’s 8-4 loss to Jackson. Eric Jokisch gave up two runs over 6 2/3 innings and did not get a decision. Matt Szczur extended his hitting streak to seven games, and was batting .455 in the stretch.

Austin Kirk gave up six runs on seven hits over four innings in Daytona’s 7-1 loss to Charlotte. Javier Baez singled, and now has hit safely in five of six games. He’s batting .238 overall.

Tayler Scott threw 7 1/3 shutout innings, giving up two hits, in Kane County’s 4-0 win over Peoria. Scott walked two and struck out two. Wilson Contreras had two hits and two RBIs, and Bijan Rademacher and Dan Vogelbach had two hits apiece. Scott now has a 1.47 ERA in three May starts.

4/6 Minor matters

Brad Nelson hit two home runs but it wasn’t enough as Albuquerque beat Iowa, 10-6, on Friday. Drew Carpenter started and took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits over four innings. Nelson, who is playing third base, went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Logan Watkins reached base five times, and was 3-for-3, scoring two runs.

Christian Villanueva was 3-for-5 with four RBIs in Tennessee’s 8-2 win over Pensacola. Alberto Cabrera struck out nine over six innings for the win. Jae-Hoon Ha had three hits.

Zeke DeVoss had three hits to power a 15-hit attack and lead Daytona to a 8-0 win over Brevard County. Javier Baez had two hits and two RBIs. Ryan Searle picked up the win in relief.

Tayler Scott gave up one unearned run over six innings and struck out six but did not get a decision as Kane County lost, 4-1, to Quad Cities. Wes Darvill had three hits.

9/4 Minor League report

Anthony Recker drove in four runs to help Tennessee beat Pensacola, 8-1, on Monday in the regular season finale. Austin Kirk picked up the win, giving up one run over 5 2/3 innings. Matt Cerda, Rubi Silva and Jae-Hoon Ha each finished with two hits. Rafael Dolis threw one inning in relief. The Smokies finished 72-68.

Peoria scored four runs in the fifth to beat Kane County, 6-2, in the regular season finale. Yaniel Cabezas hit his first home run and drove in three runs. Wilengton Cruz picked up the win in relief, throwing 4 2/3 innings of relief. The Chiefs finished 63-75.

Yakima scored in the top of the ninth to beat Boise, 5-4, and take Game 1 of the best-of-three Northwest League East Division series. Rock Shoulders hit a fourth-inning grand slam for Boise. Marco Hernandez had two hits, including a triple. Albert Almora had a hit and stole base. The two teams play Tuesday, with Tayler Scott slated to start.

8/25 Minor League report

Adrian Cardenas hit his third home run in Iowa’s 5-3 win over Oklahoma City on Friday. Cardenas connected in the eighth, and finished with two RBIs. Tony Campana was 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI. Jay Jackson picked up the win in relief.

Junior Lake, Rubi Silva and Matt Szczur each homered in Tennessee’s 11-5 win over Mobile. Dallas Beeler picked up the win, giving up five runs over five innings. Lake’s homer was his ninth and he’s now batting .280. He connected in the third for a three-run blast and Silva followed with his first of the year.

Elieser Bonne hit a three-run homer in the fifth to help Daytona beat Tampa, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader. Christian Villanueva hit a solo shot in the sixth to back Kyle Hendricks, who gave up two runs over five innings.  In the second game, Tampa beat Daytona, 11-5, collecting eight runs off starter Matt Loosen in 3 1/3 innings. Villanueva was 2-for-3 with a double.

Dustin Geiger hit his 17th home run but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost, 8-2, to Beloit. Geiger finished with two hits and two RBIs. Chadd Krist had two hits and Austin Reed pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Tayler Scott gave up five runs over five innings in Boise’s 7-6 loss to Vancouver. Marco Hernandez had three hits.

8/20 Minor League report

Greg Rohan hit a three-run home run in the first to help beat Memphis, 6-3, on Sunday. Ryan Searle picked up the win, pitching four innings of one-hit relief.

Tennessee scored four runs in the sixth to beat Chattanooga, 6-5. Chad Noble had two RBIs and Michael Burgess extended his hitting streak to five games with a hit. Tony Zych picked up the win in relief.

Daytona’s home doubleheader against Tampa was rained out. No word on makeup.

Dustin Geiger hit his 16th home run to help Peoria beat Wisconsin, 4-3. Yao-Lin Wang struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings for the win. Pin-Chieh Chen had two hits and a stolen base.

Tayler Scott gave up one run over five innings in Boise’s 4-3 loss to Yakima. Scott did not get a decision and is 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA. Xavier Batista hit a RBI double.

Mesa was off on Sunday and faces the Padres on Monday.

8/15 Minor League report

The Iowa Cubs scored seven runs in the fifth to overcome a 7-1 deficit and beat Tucson, 12-7, on Tuesday. Nate Samson had three hits and Greg Rohan had two hits and two RBIs. Marcus Hatley picked up the win in relief.

Jae-Hoon Ha hit his fifth home run in Tennessee’s 8-2 win over Birmingham. Logan Watkins had two hits and one RBIs. Junior Lake had two hits and two RBIs. Trey McNutt picked up the win in relief.

Daytona’s game at Lakeland was postponed because of unplayable field conditions. The two teams were to play a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Peoria had Tuesday off, and will play Burlington on Wednesday.

Tayler Scott threw five shutout innings in Boise’s 5-0 win over Salem-Keizer. Xavier Batista hit his fourth home run and Jeimer Candelario drove in two runs.

8/5 Minor League report

Josh Vitters hit a three-run homer to lift Iowa to a 5-1 win over Colorado Springs Saturday night and snap a seven-game losing streak. It was Vitters’ 17th home run. Chris Rusin did not get a decision but did post a quality start, giving up one run on four hits over seven innings and striking out eight. Brett Jackson reached base twice, and stole a base. He’s batting .256. Could we see Jackson and Vitters on Sunday in L.A.? Stay tuned.

Nick Struck gave up three runs on six hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 6-5 win over Jackson in the first game of a doubleheader. Justin Bour hit his 13th home run. Junior Lake had two hits and a stolen base. In the second game, Bour homered again, but it wasn’t enough as the Smokies lost, 8-7. Bour was batting .301. Michael Brenly had two hits and two RBIs.

Rebel Ridling hit his third home run in Daytona’s 12-5 loss to Dunedin. Matt Loosen took the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits over two innings.

Joseph Zeller gave up five earned runs over 3 2/3 innings in Peoria’s 8-1 loss to Cinton. Chadd Krist hit his second home run, a solo shot.

Tayler Scott gave up one earned run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings in Boise’s 6-2 win over Spokane. Daniel Vogelbach had two hits and three RBIs and Jeimer Candelario reached base twice, hitting a RBI double.

7/29 Minor League report

Brooks Raley gave up two runs and struck out eight over six innings in Iowa’s 2-1 loss to New Orleans on Saturday. Brett Jackson hit a solo homer, his 15th, but that was all the offense.

Justin Bour had two hits, including a grand slam, and five RBIs, in Tennessee’s 8-5 loss to Jacksonville. Bour was 2-for4, and the home run was his 11th this season. Nick Struck took the loss, giving up four runs over four innings.

Roni Torreyes hit a three-run homer in the sixth to tie the game but it wasn’t enough as Daytona lost, 9-7, to Bradenton.

Starling Peralta gave up five runs and struck out six over five innings in Peoria’s 10-4 loss to Beloit.

South African pitcher Tayler Scott threw five shutout innings in Boise’s 1-0 win over Tri-City. Scott now is 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA. He struck out four and walked three, giving up four hits. Hayden Simpson was credited with a hold, giving up one hit over three innings.

7/19 Minor League report

Brooks Raley threw seven shutout innings but did not get a decision in Iowa’s 2-1, 11-inning win over New Orleans. Dave Sappelt had two hits. The Iowa Cubs got some bad news Wednesday when they had to put Randy Wells on the disabled list because of a right elbow strain.

Tennessee had Wednesday off, and begins a nine-game road trip Thursday against Chattanooga. Eric Jokisch was scheduled to start.

Taylor Davis hit a solo home run but it wasn’t enough as Daytona lost, 3-1, to Charlotte. P.J. Francescon took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Javier Baez extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-hit game but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost, 9-8, in 10 innings to Western Michigan. Zeke DeVoss also had two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Tayler Scott gave up four runs over 4 2/3 innings in Boise’s 8-4 loss to Yakima. Gioskar Amaya hit his fourth home run and Trey Martin had two hits.

Anthony Prieto threw two shutout innings and Loiger Padron threw three scoreless innings in Mesa’s 4-0 win over the Dodgers. Daniel Lockhart drove in two runs, and has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.

* On Thursday, Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler was scheduled to be the designated hitter for the Mesa team, in what will be his Cubs pro debut.

7/3 Minor League report

Chris Rusin threw six shutout innings and recorded his eighth quality start but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost, 4-1. Josh Vitters had two hits, including a two-out double in the ninth.

Tennessee scored four runs in the third to beat Chattanooga, 6-4. Dae-Eun Rhee gave up four runs on four hits over five innings for the win. Greg Rohan had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs. Jae-Hoon Ha, who will play for the World team in the All-Star Futures Game, had two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Junior Lake also had two hits.

Daytona scored six runs in the sixth to post a 7-3 win over Lakeland. P.J. Francescon gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. Matt Cerda had two hits and two RBIs and Elieser Bonne was 3-for-3.

Jose Rosario gave up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits over seven innings and struck out seven in Peoria’s 6-0 loss to Kane County.

South African Tayler Scott gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit and four walks over 4 1/3 innings in Boise’s 7-5 loss to Tri-City. Gioskar Amaya had three hits and drove in two runs, and Stephen Bruno had two hits and two RBIs.

Daniel Vogelbach hit his second homer in as many games and drove in two runs in Mesa’s 5-4 loss to the Rangers. Vogelbach was hitting .462 and finished with two RBIs. Hunter Ackerman started and gave up two hits over three innings. Trevor Gretzky had two hits and scored a run.
