6/20 Minor matters

Jeff Samardzija and John Gaub combined to throw six shutout innings of relief to help Iowa beat Albuquerque, 3-2, in 14 innings Saturday. Starter Thomas Diamond gave up two runs on four hits over six innings, striking out six. Samardzija and Gaub gave up a total of two hits. Jim Adduci delivered a pinch-hit game-winning single in the 14th.

Chris Carpenter gave up one earned run on five hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 4-3 loss to West Tenn. Despite the loss, the Smokies clinched the first half North Division championship. Ty Wright had three hits and is batting .555 in his last four games. Brandon Guyer homered for the Smokies.

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up two runs on three hits and one walk over six innings in Daytona’s 3-2 win over Dunedin. Mark Reed hit a RBI single for the game-winner in the 11th. Brett Jackson had two hits for his 25th multi-hit game.

Justin Bour homered but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost to Quad Cities, 7-2. Jeffry Antigua gave up one run on five hits over four innings.

Boise picked up its first win, a 5-3 victory over Yakima. Jesus Morelli had two hits and one RBI.

6/15 Minor matters

Brett Jackson, the Cubs’ No. 1 pick in last year’s First-Year Player Draft, hit for the cycle on Monday, including a two-run walkoff homer in the 11th to help Daytona beat Lakeland, 6-4 in 11 innings. Jackson went 4-for-6 with three RBIs. He’s the first Daytona player to hit for the cycle since Felix Pie did so June 27, 2004.

Thomas Diamond gave up two runs on four hits over five innings in Iowa’s 5-4 win over Round Rock. Diamond is now 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA. Sam Fuld and Matt Camp each had three hits. Brian Schlitter picked up his ninth save.

Hung-Wen Chen threw six scoreless innings to help Tennessee post a 2-1 win over West Tenn. With the win, the Smokies have a 2 1/2 game lead over West Tenn. Also, Chris Carpenter was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week after posting a 1.46 ERA and 1-0 record in two starts last week.

Rob Whitenack gave up three runs on five hits over six innings in Peoria’s 12-5 win over Burlington. Greg Rohan had two hits, including a home run. Matt Cerda had three hits and three RBIs.

6/9 Minor matters

It was a good day for Cubs’ Minor League pitchers on Tuesday. Thomas Diamond threw five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out eight in Iowa’s 5-1 win over New Orleans. Chad Tracy had his fourth four-hit game, including two solo homers. He’s batting .530 in his last four games. Congrats to Mitch Atkins who was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 in two starts with a 0.75 ERA. He struck out 14 over 12 innings.

Chris Carpenter threw 6 1/3 shutout innings and struck out six in Tennessee’s 3-0 win over Huntsville. Ty Wright hit his ninth home run. He’s batting .395 during a nine-game hitting streak.

Christopher Archer threw six shutout innings, giving up two hits and fanning eight in Daytona’s 7-0 win over Palm Beach. Brett Jackson had two hits, including a double, and Kyler Burke had two hits.

Jeff Antigua gave up four runs on six hits over five innings and struck out six in Peoria’s 7-4 win over Lansing. Justin Bour hit his third homer and Logan Watkins had his 13th multi-hit game.

Peoria had five players named to the MidWest League mid-season All-Star team: Hak-Ju Lee, Matt Cerda, Logan Watkins, Trey McNutt and James Leverton.

6/4 Minor matters

Iowa scored two runs in the seventh to beat Round Rock 4-3 in the first game of a makeup doubleheader Thursday. Brad Snyder had two hits, including his eighth home run. John Gaub picked up the win in relief. In the second game, Thomas Diamond gave up four runs on four hits and three walks over four innings in a 5-3 loss. Diamond did strike out seven. Bryan LaHair hit his fifth homer and Micah Hoffpauir had two hits.

Chris Carpenter gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings in Tennessee’s 5-2 win over Birmingham. Russ Canzler had four hits and scored two runs.

Chris Archer gave up one run on four hits over five innings and struck out six to help Daytona beat Charlotte, 6-3. Smaily Borges hit his third homer of the season and also hit a double.

Rob Whitenack gave up four runs on six hits over five innings in Peoria’s 10-4 loss to South Bend. Matt Cerda had four hits and two RBIs. Jae-Hoon Ha had two hits, and has hit safely in six of seven games since joining the Chiefs.

5/30 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond gave up one run on five hits over six innings but Nashville scored four runs in the ninth to beat Iowa, 5-3. Diamond struck out five and notched his third quality start in a row. He’s now 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA. Chad Tracy had three hits and extended his hitting streak to five games. Andrew Cashner, expected to be called up this week to the big league team, worked a scoreless eighth inning.

Hung-Wen Chen threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings to help Tennessee beat Montgomery, 3-0. It was Chen’s fourth consecutive quality start.

Smaily Borges hit his second homer in Daytona’s 5-4 loss to Jupiter. Chris Rusin gave up four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. Also, Brett Jackson, Rafael Dolis and Aaron Shafer were named to the Florida State League All-Star team.

Nick Struck gave up two hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Peoria’s 3-2, 12-inning loss to Beloit. Jae-Hoon Ha hit his first homer, a solo shot. Greg Rohan had two hits, his 13th multi-hit game of the season.

5/25 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond struck out eight over six innings and gave up one run but took the loss as Salt Lake blanked Iowa, 1-0, on Monday. The run came on a homer off Diamond, now 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA. Chris Robinson had three hits. Jay Jackson gave up three hits over three innings in relief.

Ryan Buchter picked up the win in relief as Tennessee scored twice in the ninth for a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville. Matt Spencer reached base three times with two hits and a walk.

Chris Rusin threw five scoreless innings to help Daytona beat Brevard County, 4-2. Rusin struck out six for the win. Ryan Flaherty had two hits, including his first homer, and three RBIs.

Jonathon Mota hit his first home run but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost 8-7 in 10 innings to Quad Cities. Mota had two RBIs in the game.

5/19 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond improved to 3-0 with a win in Iowa’s 6-1 win over Reno on Tuesday. Diamond gave up one run on three hits over six innings and struck out six. Sam Fuld notched his third three-hit game of the year, hitting a double and triple. Brad Snyder had three hits.

Hung-Wen Chen gave up two runs on two hits but took the loss in Tennessee’s 2-1 loss to Huntsville. He also hit a double. On Wednesday, Huntsville beat Tennessee, 11-3. Russ Canzler hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot, and Ty Wright also hit a solo homer.

Chris Archer struck out 10 and gave up one run on two hits over six innings to help Dayonta beat St. Lucie, 4-1. Rebel Ridling extended his hitting streak to three games and drove in two runs.

The Peoria Chiefs were handed their worst loss since 2006 when Wisconsin beat them, 14-1. Rob Whitenack gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings. Nelson Perez had the Chiefs’ only hit, a RBI double.

5/14 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings in Iowa’s 8-4 win over Las Vegas on Thursday. Diamond now has a 2-0 record and 2.17 ERA. Bryan LaHair hit his fourth homer of the year and was a triple shy of the cycle. Chad Tracy had four hits.

Hung-Wen Chen gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits over seven innings in Tennessee’s 5-3 loss to Carolina. The Smokies made four errors in the game.

Chris Archer threw five shutout innings, giving up one hit, but it wasn’t enough as Daytona lost, 3-2 to Bradenton. Ryan Flaherty had two hits.

Trey McNutt threw six shutout innings in Peoria’s 7-1 win over Burlington. McNutt struck out seven. Justin Bour and Matt Cerda each homered for the Chiefs, who ended a five-game losing streak with the win.

5/3 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond gave up one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost, 5-4, to Omaha on Sunday. Diamond now has a 1.65 ERA. Bryan LaHair homered and Darwin Barney had three hits. Brad Snyder drove in two runs and leads the team with 18 RBIs.

Starlin Castro, Tony Campana and Matt Spencer each had two hits in Tennessee’s 4-3 loss to Chattanooga. Hung-Wen Chen gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Castro recorded his 13th multi-hit game of the year and leads the team with 53 total bases.

Michael Brenly had three hits in Daytona’s 8-4 loss to Clearwater. Alberto Cabrera took the loss, giving up seven runs on 10 hits over four innings. Brett Jackson had two hits and leads the team with a .301 batting average.

The Peoria Chiefs lost for the first time at home, dropping a 4-3 decision to Clinton. Trey McNut gave up one run on three hits over four innings, and now has a 1.57 ERA. Richard Jones homered for the second consecutive game.

4/21 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond gave up one run on three hits over six innings in Iowa’s 4-3 loss to Memphis. Brad Snyder extended his hitting streak to six games with a ninth inning solo homer. It was his 100th Minor League homer.

Brandon Guyer threw out a runner at home in the ninth to preserve Tennessee’s 6-5 win over Carolina. Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBIs. He’s hitting .406 in that streak.

Alberto Cabrera gave up six runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings in Daytona’s 6-4 loss to Dunedin. Brett Jackson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a triple. He’s hitting .415 in that stretch.

Justin Bour went 3-for-3 to help Peoria rally for an 8-7, 11-inning win over Kane County. Hak-Ju Lee extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 1-for-5, and Matt Cerda had two hits, including a triple.
