9/8 Cubs rotation vs Brewers – UPDATED

Tom Gorzelanny, sidelined with a hairline fracture under the nail of his left pinkie finger, will throw a bullpen session this weekend. Gorzelanny (7-8, 3.90 ERA) was hit on the hand by a line drive by Pittsburgh’s Jose Tabata in the third inning Sept. 1. The lefty has been able to play catch.

“It’s still sore from bruising,” Gorzelanny said Wednesday. “When I’m throwing or holding [the ball] it doesn’t feel bad.”

The Cubs will keep the starting rotation in line for the weekend series against Milwaukee, which opens Friday. Carlos Zambrano (7-6, 4.23 ERA) will start Friday, followed by Ryan Dempster (12-10, 3.76 ERA) and rookie Casey Coleman (1-1 , 5.81 ERA).

9/7 Injury updates

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez did not start for the second straight game because of a sore right quad. He continued to get treatment and was not available to pinch-hit. His status was day to day. The Cubs called up infielder Bobby Scales from Triple-A Iowa as insurance.

Pitcher Tom Gorzelanny threw on the side but has not been penciled into the rotation yet. With the return of Carlos Silva from the disabled list and Jeff Samardzija joining the team from Triple-A Iowa, the Cubs may tinker with their rotation. Right now, Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster are scheduled to pitch Friday and Saturday in Milwaukee. Casey Coleman is slated for Sunday but that may change.

9/3 Gorzelanny update

Tom Gorzelanny has seen a replay of Jose Tabata’s line drive coming at him on Wednesday. He doesn’t want to watch it again.

“It was definitely going to my face,” Gorzelanny said Friday. “I turned my head a little bit when I saw it and put my hand up. If I didn’t have my pinkie in the way, it would’ve hit my cheek, which would’ve been pretty bad. It wouldn’t have been a good feeling.”

Gorzelanny (7-8, 3.90 ERA) will miss at least one start and possibly two because of a small incomplete hairline fracture underneath the fingernail of his left pinkie, suffered when he was hit by the ball. The lefty was wearing a small mini brace on the finger Friday and said the swelling has gone done considerably since the incident happened in the third inning of the Cubs’ game Wednesday against the Pirates.

His former Pittsburgh teammate Paul Maholm was hit in the face by a line drive in Class A ball and Gorzelanny said “it’s not pretty.”

“It’s scary and there’s nothing you can do to defend yourself,” Gorzelanny said.

However, he did try to convince athletic trainer Mark O’Neal that he could stay in the game after being hit.

“It hit me in the hand, in the pinkie, so it was sort of sore,” Gorzelanny said. “When you get hit, you get a bruise. For the first minute or two, it hurt, but I said, ‘Let me see if it goes away.’ They didn’t want to take any chances. I would’ve liked to have [stayed in] but it probably wouldn’t have been a good idea.”

9/3 Rotation update

The Cubs have tweaked their rotation for this weekend’s series vs. the Mets. Randy Wells will start Friday and be followed by Carlos Zambrano on Saturday and Ryan Dempster on Sunday. Carlos Silva or Casey Coleman will start Monday and Tuesday against the Astros, and then Wells will be back on the mound Wednesday. Tom Gorzelanny was expected to miss one start, possibly two because of a hairline fracture under the left nail of his pinkie.

9/2 Gorzelanny to miss start

Cubs pitcher Tom Gorzelanny will miss his next start after he was hit on the left hand by a line drive by the Pirates Jose Tabata. A CT scan Thursday of Gorzelanny’s hand showed a small incomplete hairline fracture underneath the pinkie finger, which is stable. His next start would have been Tuesday but the swelling needs to subside in his hand before he can resume baseball activities. The Cubs could insert Carlos Silva into the rotation in Gorzelanny’s spot Tuesday against the Astros.

9/1 Gorzelanny – UPDATE

X-rays of Tom Gorzelanny’s left hand were inconclusive Wednesday but did show there was no displacement and the Cubs pitcher will have a CT scan on Thursday. Gorzelanny was hit by a line drive by Pittsburgh’s Jose Tabata in the third inning Wednesday. The pitcher will undergo more tests on Thursday once the swelling has subsided.

Gorzelanny had retired the first batter in the third and then Tabata hit the ball hard at the left-hander who put his hands in front of him to protect him. He fell to his knees on the mound. Cubs athletic trainer Mark O’Neal went to the pitcher and then guided him off the field. Gorzelanny tried to talk O’Neal into letting him stay in the game.

“He said, ‘Give me a minute, give me a minute,'” Cubs manager Mike Quade said.

8/27 Gorzelanny: "Nothing worked"

Cubs pitcher Tom Gorzelanny had served up seven home runs in his 25 other games this year, so the three long balls off him by the Reds were a surprise.

“I focus on trying to keep the ball down and get guys to ground out and haven’t given up too many long balls,” he said.

Jay Bruce connected on a hanging slider in the third inning and a “fastball that decided to stay right in the middle of the plate” in the fifth, Gorzelanny said. Rookie Chris Valaika also hit his first home run off the Cubs lefty in the fifth.

“Good hitters hit those balls and you can’t always get away with bad pitches,” Gorzelanny said, talking more about Bruce’s blasts. “You make mistakes and you pay, especially in this league.”

In Gorzelanny’s last four starts against the Reds, the lefty had given up seven earned runs over 26 2/3 innings but on Friday, they scored six off him in five innings.

“Nothing worked for me today,” Gorzelanny said. “I made bad pitches and got behind guys and didn’t execute my pitches. It’s just a real bad outing.”
