8/6 Extra bases

Tom Gorzelanny picked up his ninth quality start but it wasn’t good enough as he took the loss in the Cubs’ 3-0 loss to the Reds Friday. Gorzelanny now has received two or fewer runs in 10 of his starts, including no runs four times.

Some other notes from Friday’s game:

* Blake DeWitt is 7-for-20 with two runs, a double, a home run and five RBIs since joining the Cubs Sunday. He has hit safely in four of his five games.

* Geovany Soto walked for the 51st time this year, which ranks second among big league catchers. He’s 11 shy of his career-high 62 walks in 2008.

* Marlon Byrd was 1-for-4 and is batting .350 in his last 11 games with five walks, six runs, two doubles, a triple and five RBIs.

7/10 Probable pitchers

Looking ahead to the Cubs’ post-All-Star break series against the Phillies, which begins Thursday at Wrigley Field, the rotation will be Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly, Randy Wells, Tom Gorzelanny and Carlos Silva. The Cubs wanted to split the two left-handers, Lilly and Gorzelanny, and were able to do that. But they also want to give Silva as much time as possible. He is expected to make his start Sunday against the Dodgers and would not pitch again until July 19.

6/30 Cubs' Hill: "We believe"

Despite Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Pirates, which dropped the Cubs to 10-games below .500, the players remained optimistic.

“There’s always time,” pitcher Tom Gorzelanny said. “There’s definitely a lot of baseball to be played. We need to get going, we need to win some games here. There’s definitely a lot of baseball to be played and there’s a lot of crazy things that have happened before and there’s no reason for us to panic or worry or believe that we could be some miracle team because we’re a good team and we can put what’s been going on behind us.”

Said Koyie Hill: “We believe in each other, big time.”

Said Alfonso Soriano: “There’s a lot of games left — there’s three months. I know the first three months have not been very good for us. I believe in this team because there’s a lot of great players and a lot of great teammates, also.”

The reality is, the Cubs haven’t won consecutive games since June 16-17 vs. Oakland. They’re now 1-9 in the last 10 series. They’ve now played 43 games decided by two or fewer runs and are 16-27 in those games. In the last 11 games, they’ve scored three or fewer runs, including one run or less in six of those games.

“It’s not like we’re not giving an effort or we’re playing dumb baseball,” Hill said. “I could see if we were taking crazy swings and everybody was up there trying to hit a homer but that’s not the case.”

6/27 Early Sunday notes

The tarp is on the field at U.S. Cellular Field but it’s early …

* The Cubs have scored three or fewer runs in six of the last seven games, and been shutout three times in the last seven games. They’re batting .193 heading in the last five games into Sunday’s contest vs. White Sox.

* Aramis Ramirez’s homer Saturday ended a string of 30-consecutive innings without an extra-base hit. Ramirez now has 194 homers with the Cubs, ninth most in franchise history. Next up is Hank Sauer at 198.

* The Cubs bullpen has a 2.80 ERA in June and has lowered that mark every month. The relievers had a 4.80 ERA in April and 3.96 ERA in May.

* The Cubs have played 28 one-run games, most in the Majors. They are 11-17 in those games.

* When reliever Brian Schlitter makes his ML debut, he’ll be the ninth rookie to appear in a game this year for the Cubs. They used 14 in 2009 and 11 in 2008. The franchise record is 20, done in 1902.

* Looking ahead to the upcoming series vs. the Pirates, the rotation will be:

Monday: Randy Wells vs. Paul Maholm

Tuesday: Ted Lilly vs. Jeff Karstens

Wednesday: Tom Gorzelanny vs. Brad Lincoln

6/26 Zambrano to 'pen on his return

When Carlos Zambrano returns to the Cubs, he will be assigned to the bullpen, not the rotation, Lou Piniella said Saturday. Tom Gorzelanny will take Zambrano’s place in the rotation. Is this a short or long term decision?

“It’s not short term, that’s for sure,” Piniella said.

Zambrano was suspended indefinitely after throwing a tantrum in the dugout on Friday, accusing his teammates of not playing well behind him. The Cubs sent a letter to Major League Baseball Friday night, asking for guidelines in the matter. They must play a man short because a suspended player cannot be replaced on the 25-man roster.

Will Zambrano come back?

“I would think at some point, yes,” Piniella said. “There’s some work that needs to be done.”
