11/16 AFL final update

The Mesa Solar Sox ended the Arizona Fall League season on Thursday with an 8-3 loss to Phoenix. Cubs prospect Matt Szczur was 0-for-4, and finished his AFL stint batting .264. Logan Watkins, a late add to take Javier Baez’s place on the roster, batted .219 in nine games, and Rubi Silva batted .206 in 20 games. Among the Cubs pitching prospects who took part, Dae-Eun Rhee posted a 6.27 ERA in six games, giving up 13 earned runs over 18 2/3 innings in six starts. Nick Struck, the Cubs’ Minor League pitcher of the year, compiled a 5.51 ERA in 12 appearances, giving up 10 earned runs on 12 hits and 12 walks over 16 1/3 innings. Kevin Rhoderick served up five runs on seven hits and struck out 14 over 9 1/3 innings. Tony Zych posted a 3.86 ERA in 13 games, giving up 18 hits and walking two over 14 innings. Peoria and Salt River will play for the AFL championship on Saturday at Scottsdale Stadium.

11/9 AFL & winter ball updates

* Logan Watkins scored on Jonathan Schoop’s single with two outs in the eighth to lift the Mesa Solar Sox to a 4-3 win over Phoenix in Arizona Fall League play on Thursday. Tony Zych was credited with a hold. On Friday, Mesa travels to Scottsdale to face Salt River.

* Junior Lake was 4-for-5 on Tuesday with one RBIs for Estrellas de Oriente in the Dominican winter league. Diory Hernandez was batting .233 in 17 games with Toros de Este in the Dominican. Christian Villanueva, whom the Cubs acquired from the Rangers, was batting .200 in 10 games for Yaquis de Obregon in Mexico. Jae-Hoon Ha was batting .217 in 16 games while Ty Wright was hitting .250 in 19 games for the Tigres de Aragua in Venezuela.

11/7 AFL update

Matt Szczur and Logan Watkins each had one hit but it wasn’t enough as Mesa was blanked, 7-0, by Surprise on Tuesday in Arizona Fall League play. Tony Zych pitched one inning of relief, and needed nine pitches to retire the side. On Wednesday, Mesa travels to Scottsdale for a 12:35 p.m. MT game. The AFL season ends Nov. 15.

10/30 AFL update

Cubs prospect Tony Zych picked up his first save in the Arizona Fall League as the Mesa Solar Sox beat Phoenix, 7-5, on Tuesday. The Solar Sox play host to Salt River on Wednesday.

10/24 AFL update

Javier Baez was 1-for-5 with one RBI in Mesa’s 7-7 tie with Phoenix in Arizona Fall League play on Tuesday. Baez now has driven in 13 runs, tops in the AFL. Cubs prospect Dae-Eun Rhee started for Mesa, and gave up two runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings. Tony Zych also pitched and gave up three hits over 1 2/3 scoreless innings. The game was called after 10 innings. Mesa plays host to Scottsdale on Wednesday at HoHoKam Park.

10/14 AFL update

Javier Baez hit a three-run homer, his second in the Arizona Fall League, to help the Mesa Solar Sox beat Phoenix, 8-3, on Saturday. Baez is batting .294 in the AFL. Rubi Silva was 2-for-5 and scored two runs. Tony Zych pitched the ninth. He has given up one hit over 2 1/3 scoreless innings in three outings, striking out two. The Solar Sox have Sunday off, then return to action Monday, playing host to Peoria at HoHoKam Stadium at 12:35 p.m. MT.

10/12 AZ Fall League update

The Mesa Solar Sox edged Surprise, 6-5, on Thursday in Arizona Fall League play. Javier Baez, the Cubs’ top prospect who started at shortstop, hit a RBI double and now is 4-for-13 (.308) in three games. Dae-Eun Rhee gave up two runs on six hits and struck out two over two innings. Matt Szczur also started for Mesa, and was 1-for-4 with one RBI and scored a run. He’s 2-for-10 with one RBIs in three games. Tony Zych picked up the win in relief. He’s thrown 1 1/3 hitless innings in two games in relief, striking out two.
