6/29 Minor matters part I

Pitchers Chris Archer and Aaron Shafer were promoted from Class A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee. Archer was 7-1 with a 2.86 ERA with Daytona while Shafer was 2-1 with a 0.96 ERA in 24 appearances. Alberto Cabrera and Alex Maestri were sent from the Smokies to Daytona.

* Also, nine members of the Smokies were named Tuesday to the Southern League All-Star Game.  Position players Tony Campana, Robinson Chirinos, Steve Clevenger, Blake Lalli and Ty Wright will join teammates Austin Bibens-Dirkx, Ryan Buchter, David Cales and Hung-Wen Chen on the North Division roster at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Ala. for the July 12 game.

Players were selected by a vote of Southern League field managers, radio broadcasters, general managers and print media.

6/27 Jackson, Wright, Dolis, McNutt promoted

The Cubs promoted four of their Minor Leaguers on Sunday, including outfielder Brett Jackson, the team’s 2009 No. 1 Draft pick, from Class A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee.
Jackson, who will play for the U.S. Team in the All-Star Futures Game, was batting .316 in 67 games with 19 doubles, eight triples, six homers and 38 RBIs.

Also promoted on from Daytona to Tennessee was right-hander pitcher Rafael Dolis, who was 4-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 14 games (13 starts). He has struck out 48 over 71 innings.

Trey McNutt, a right-handed pitcher who is 6-0 with a 1.51 ERA in 13 starts, was moved up from Class A Peoria to Daytona. McNutt has struck out 70 over 59 2/3 innings. In his last start June 16 against Burlington, he gave up one run over five scoreless innings.

Ty Wright, who has 51 RBIs in 73 games, also was promoted, moving up from Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa. He was batting .289 with 21 doubles and 10 homers.

6/20 Ramirez update & Smokies win

Aramis Ramirez went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout on Saturday night in a rehab start with Class A Peoria. Ramirez batted second for the Chiefs in their game against Quad Cities. He grounded out to the shortstop in the first, was called out on strikes in the third and was intentionally walked in the fourth with two outs and runners at second and third. He grounded out in the sixth in his last at-bat. The Chiefs lost 7-2 to Quad Cities in front of 4,776 at O’Brien Field. He’ll start again Sunday.

* Double-A Tennessee clinched the Southern League North Division first-half title on Saturday. The Smokies won when West Tenn dropped the first game of a doubleheader. The Smokies have a 41-27 record under first-year manager Bill Dancy. Ty Wright had three hits and one RBIs, and now is batting .301 with 10 homers and 50 RBIs.

5/24 Minor matters & Wright's honor

Tennessee’s Ty Wright was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week for the week of May 17-23. Wright hit two grand slams during the week and he raised his season RBIs total to 42. It’s not even the All-Star break. For the week, he batted .321 with 13 RBIs, four home runs and three doubles. Wright is batting .291 for the season.

In Minor League games Sunday:

* J.R. Mathes gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings in Iowa’s 11-7 win over Colorado Springs on Sunday. Jim Adduci and Darwin Barney each had three hits and Adduci drove in a season-high four runs.

* Hung-Wen chen gave up three runs on eight hits over six innings in Tennessee’s 4-1 loss to Jacksonville. Wright drove in the only run wiht a double. He now has an RBI in four of his last five games.

* DJ LeMahieu went 4-for-4 in Daytona’s 9-7 loss to Fort Myers. LeMahieu had two RBIs and stole two bases.

* Rob Whitenack gave up three runs on three hits and three walks over six innings in Peoria’s 6-5 win over Quad Cities. With the win, the Chiefs moved into a second-place tie.
