2/28 Rainy Sunday schedule

The Cubs had an abbreviated workout Sunday because of the rain. No live BP was scheduled. Angel Guzman was to throw in the batting cage for the first time since sidelined with some discomfort in his shoulder. The shortened time was welcomed by the Canadian players on the roster who want to watch the Olympic gold medal hockey game between the U.S. and Canada. Vince Perkins made sure his Canada T-shirt was visible in his locker.

Monday is photo day for the Cubs, which means players will be a little late getting onto the field at Fitch Park.

2/22 Oh, Canada

It was a tough morning Monday for the Canadian players on the Cubs following the U.S. hockey team’s 5-3 win in the Olympics over Canada. Chris Robinson, a catcher from London, Ontario, watched the game with some Canadian friends from other baseball teams training in Arizona.

“We didn’t want to go to work on Monday,” he said.

Pitcher Vince Perkins, born in Victoria, British Columbia, was razzed as soon as he walked into the clubhouse at Fitch Park Monday.

Robinson played for the Canadian baseball team in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, calling it an “awesome experience.” He does have a hockey upbringing — who doesn’t in Canada? — having played for 15 years.

“I used to joke I was a backwards Canadian,” Robinson said. “I used to play hockey to stay in shape for baseball.”

Team Canada vs. Blackhawks

How about this for an intracity challenge: the Cubs players vs. the Blackhawks in both a hockey game and a baseball game and see who wins. “It’d be a good reality show — ‘Crossover Athletes,'” Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster said.

The Cubs nearly have enough Canadians in the organization to field their own hockey team. Dempster has played right wing, Corey Koskie could be the left wing, Rich Harden was a defenseman, and Vince Perkins was a center. All they’d have to do is recruit Carlos Zambrano to be the goalie.

Classic exhibition update

Alex Maestri picked up the win in relief for the Italian team in an 5-1 exhibition victory Wednesday against Florida. Maestri pitched at Class A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee last season for the Cubs.

Vince Perkins took the loss in Team Canada’s 9-2 loss to Florida on Wednesday. He gave up three runs on two hits and struck out three in 2 1/3 innings.
