12/16 Could Wood come back?

There are multiple reports that the Cubs could be wrapping up a deal with free agent Kerry Wood. The White Sox reportedly offered the right-hander a two-year contract, but then signed Jesse Crain. Wood, who was originally drafted by the Cubs, had reportedly been seeking a two-year, $12 million deal, which would not appear to be a good fit for the cost-conscious team. The Cubs are well-versed in Wood’s medical history — he’s been on the disabled list 14 times in his career because of his shoulder, elbow, back and blisters. The 33-year-old right-hander isn’t going to strike out 20 in a game but was effective in short relief with the Yankees last season, compiling a 0.69 ERA in 24 games (two earned runs in 26 innings, 31 strikeouts). As a starter, he has a career 71-55 record with a 3.69 ERA, and as a reliever, he’s 12-13 with 62 saves (including 34 with the Cubs in 2008) and a 3.45 ERA.

The Cubs do want an experienced right-hander in the bullpen to compliment lefty Sean Marshall, and Wood would welcome coming back to Wrigley Field. He lives in Chicago year-round.

6/28 Some Cubs-White Sox trivia

On Sunday, the Cubs ended the White Sox’s 11-game winning streak. It was the Sox’s first setback since Ted Lilly and the Cubs beat them on June 13. The White Sox’s 11-game winning streak was the longest in the Majors bookended by losses to the same opponent since 1948 when the Red Sox won 13 straight between losses to the Tigers.

4/26 More at stake in Cubs vs. White Sox

The Cubs and White Sox will be battling for more than just bragging rights. The two teams Monday announced an official structure to the Interleague rivalry known as the Crosstown Classic. Starting this year, the series will be called the BP Crosstown Cup. Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and manager Lou Piniella joined White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham and catcher A.J. Pierzynski in announcing the details.

“Cubs and Sox fans have always been passionate about this rivalry. The BP Crosstown Cup recognizes the excitement of winning the crosstown series,” Ricketts said. “In addition to bragging rights, fans will have a chance to win prizes through this promotion, which will make the series even more fun.”

Under the rules of the BP Crosstown Cup, the two teams will continue to meet in a yearly six-game head-to-head series as they have since 1997. The team with the most wins in the yearly series will be formally awarded the rivalry’s namesake trophy. If the annual series is split 3-3, the BP Crosstown Cup will be awarded to the winner of the series’ last game.

The Cubs and White Sox kick off their first series of 2010 at Wrigley Field on June 11 and will celebrate their 75th meeting on June 13. The BP Crosstown Cup trophy will be awarded in a formal ceremony at U.S. Cellular Field following the deciding game of the six-game series.

4/4 Ozzie sends a message

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who was in Atlanta for exhibition games Friday and Saturday, left a message in the visiting manager’s office at Turner Field for Lou Piniella. It was in Spanish.

“He said, ‘Good luck’ and a couple more phrases,” Piniella said Sunday. “And it wasn’t ‘Twitted.’”

Guillen started his own Twitter account this spring but it’s a foreign concept to Piniella. When showed how to use the social networking site, he said, “You have to type?”
