1/21 Winter league updates

* Cubs prospect Wilson Contreras hit a two-run pinch-hit homer in a six-run fourth inning to lead Aragua to an 11-5 victory over La Guaira in the Venezuelan playoffs. Contreras went 2-for-3 in the game. He batted .242 in 80 games last season with Class A Daytona. Another Cubs prospect, Rubi Silva, was 2-for-4.

* Javy Baez was 0-for-4 in Santurce’s 8-2 loss to Mayaguez in the first game of the Puerto Rican championship series. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series will be played Wednesday.

* Junior Lake was 0-for-4 for Estrellas in a 5-3 loss to Gigantes in the Dominican league championship series. The best-of-nine series is tied at two wins apiece, and Game 5 will be played Wednesday.

9/7 Minor matters – Saturday’s games

Daytona scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth on Wilson Contreras’ home run to beat Fort Myers, 8-7, in Game 3 of the FSL championship. Fort Myers leads the best of five series, 2-1. Contreras was 3-for-3 with a double as well as his home run. Ben Carhart and Billy McKinney each had two hits.

Kane County scored four runs in the final three innings to beat Cedar Rapids, 5-2. The Cougars are one win away from advancing to the Midwest League championship, and play host to Cedar Rapids today. Mark Zagunis had two hits, including a solo home run in the ninth. Michael Heesch picked up the win in relief.

9/9 Boise aims at NW League title

Wilson Contreras hit a walkoff RBI single in the ninth to lift Class A Boise to a 3-2 victory Saturday night over Vancouver in Game 2 of the Northwest League championship series. The deciding Game 3 will be played Sunday night, with Tayler Scott scheduled to start. On Saturday, Pierce Johnson gave up one unearned run over three innings and struck out six. Stephen Bruno had an RBI. Nathan Dorris picked up the win in relief.
