6/10 What a mess

Did you notice the Brewers scored three runs in three different innings without a hit? Thursday’s sloppy play by the Cubs resulted in a 5-4, 10-inning loss, and they ended the nine-game, 11-day road trip against NL Central teams at 3-6. Ouch.

“We have to win no matter who we’re playing against,” starter Ryan Dempster said. “The more this season keeps getting later and later, the more losses pile up, we have to win more games, that’s the bottom line. Do whatever you can do to win more games.”

It’ll be a long drive back to Chicago on Interstate 94 for the Cubs.

“We haven’t been playing well and we know it,” Xavier Nady said. “We have to obviously turn things around sooner or later or it’s going to be a long year. Hopefully, going home will help us out and we’ll go from there.”

6/4 D-Lee & rumors

Derrek Lee was surprised to hear his name mentioned this week in trade rumors. The Angels are looking for a first baseman after Kendry Morales injured his leg in a freak accident. One Chicagto publication quoted “excellent baseball sources” saying Lee and Xavier Nady were possibilities.

“Who are the ‘excellent sources?'” Lee said. “I’ve got nothing for you about that.”

Lee has a no-trade clause, so any deal would have to get his approval. The first baseman said he wants to stay in Chicago.

“It happens with every team,” Lee said of the rumors. “When you’re not playing well, trade rumors pop up. You turn around and play well and you won’t hear them. It’s part of the business.”

6/3 Lee & Nady rumors

There’s no truth to the rumors that the Angels have contacted the Cubs re: possibly acquiring Derrek Lee or Xavier Nady. The Angels are looking for first base help with Kendry Morales out after freak accident at home plate. I was told the Angels have not talked to the Cubs about anyone. The Cubs still feel they are in the race in the NL Central. If that doesn’t change by late July, closer to the trading deadline, there could be some moves.

5/26 Extra bases

Xavier Nady’s home run in the sixth was his first pinch-hit homer for the Cubs and third of his career. He also did so twice while with Pittsburgh: Aug. 13, 2007, in the second game of a doubleheader against the Giants; and Aug. 24, 2007, against Houston.

* Mike Fontenot hit two doubles Wednesday, the first time he’s done that since June 25, 2007, vs. Colorado. In that game, he went 5-for-5 with two RBIs.

Tuesday night marked the first time in Major League history that two Xaviers have played against each other. Coincidentally, they both started in right field. Chicago’s Xavier Nady and L.A.’s Xavier Paul are the only two X-men to play in the big leagues at the same time, and Tuesday marked the first time they squared off in the same game. According to STATS Inc., there have only been four Xaviers in ML history:

* Xavier Rescigno: A right-handed pitcher, he played for Pittsburgh from 1943-45.

* Xavier Hernandez: A right-handed pitcher who played for Toronto, Houston, New York (A.L.), Cincinnati and Texas from 1989-1998.

* Xavier Nady: San Diego, New York (N.L.), Pittsburgh, New York (A.L.) and Chicago (N.L.) from 2000, 2003-2010.

* Xavier Paul: Los Angeles (N.L.) in 2009-10

5/20 Cubs to begin Interleague play

The Cubs travel to Texas after Thursday’s game in Philadelphia for a three-game Interleague series against the Rangers. Lou Piniella said the games at an American League park which use the designated hitter will allow him to use players who haven’t had many at-bats lately, such as Xavier Nady, Jeff Baker and Tyler Colvin.

“We’ll probably DH Nady one day and I can put Baker in right one day,” Piniella said. “I haven’t looked at the numbers yet — lefty, righty — to see how they can get people out. On Friday, if we wanted to we could DH one of our regulars and give them a breather that way.”

It’s been tough for Nady.

“He hasn’t been able to play on a consistent basis,” Piniella said. “He didn’t really have what you’d classify as a full swing. He’s a much better hitter than what the numbers show. I’m hoping some time in the not too distant future we’ll start getting some production. The problem is getting him out on the field.”

Piniella likes the idea of having an extra bat in the lineup — and that’s not a knock on the three pitchers who start in the series, Ted Lilly, Randy Wells and Carlos Silva.

The American League does lead in Interleague play since it began in 1997. Is the AL better?

“We’ll find out,” Piniella said. “I guess by the middle or end of June we’ll know.”

5/9 Cubs in the pink

Some of the Cubs players had pink bats to use Sunday, part of Major League Baseball’s tribute on Mother’s Day. Mike Fontenot, Geovany Soto, Marlon Byrd, Jeff Baker, Ryan Theriot, Xavier Nady and Starlin Castro all had pink bats. So did James Russell.

Wait — Russell is a reliever and does not have a ML at-bat. He may never get one. But he had a pink bat and was going to let starter Ryan Dempster use it. Russell got two of the pink bats and signed one, adding some sentiments, to give to his mother, Melanie, who was in town for the series.

How many games has she seen Russell pitch or play in?

“More than I can even count,” he said.

Xavier Nady’s mom, Cindy, made the ultimate baseball mom road trip. She attended the Kentucky Derby last weekend and took a tour of the Louisville Slugger factory. They were making the pink bats at that time. Nady didn’t know if she saw his bat being manufactured.

Castro had one because the Double-A Tennessee team planned on using pink bats Sunday. The pink bats and wristbands are part of MLB’s initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Smokies shipped Castro’s special bat to Cincinnati. The shortstop’s bat was special. It was engraved with his mother’s name, Ana Francisca Tatis.
