The Cubs placed reliever Zach Putnam on the 15-day disabled list because of bone spur in his right elbow and recalled left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa.
Putnman pitched Tuesday night but told manager Dale Sveum his elbow felt it was “on fire.” He underwent an MRI on Wednesday. Putnam, 25, had given up seven earned runs over 3 1/3 innings in five appearances with the Cubs. Raley, 24, was 5-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 13 appearances (12 starts) with Iowa. He made his big league debut last August, and was 1-2 with an 8.14 ERA in five starts.
“Right now, obviously, our bullpen is a little short and we have some length there [with Raley] if anything happened today,” Sveum said.
Late Tuesday, the Cubs acquired reliever Henry Rodriguez from the Nationals for Minor League pitcher Ian Dickson. Rodriguez has not joined the Cubs yet.
“I don’t think he’s thrown in 10 days,” Sveum said. “We have some time to let him throw and see where we’re at in a couple days.”
Rodriguez, 26, had a 4.00 ERA in 17 relief appearances with the Nationals before he was designated for assignment on June 4.

The Cubs shuffled their bullpen Thursday, promoting right-hander Zach Putnam from Triple-A Iowa and optioning right-hander Alex Burnett to the Minor League team. To make room on the 40-man roster, Kyuji Fujikawa, who needs Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Putnam was 1-1 with four saves and a 3.26 ERA in 17 games with Iowa. He had 22 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings. The right-hander, whom the Cubs claimed off waivers from the Rockies, was one of the last players cut in Spring Training. He appeared in 11 Cactus League games, and gave up four runs on 14 hits over 10 innings while striking out six. He and Blake Parker were sharing the closer’s role at Iowa.
“I’ve always loved pitching in the back of the bullpen,” Putnam said.
Burnett was claimed off waivers from the Orioles and arrived about a half hour before the Cubs’ Interleague game against the White Sox. He made his first appearance Wednesday, and gave up one hit in one inning.

The Cubs added another arm to the bullpen mix on Friday when they claimed right-handed pitcher Zach Putnam off waivers from the Rockies. Putnam, 25, is 19-12 with 26 saves and a 3.90 ERA in 171 career Minor League games, all but 15 as a reliever. He has given up 18 home runs over 295 2/3 innings and walked 94 while striking out 270. Originally selected by the Indians in the fifth round of the 2008 Draft, Putnam was traded to the Rockies in January for pitcher Kevin Slowey. Putnam has appeared in 10 Major League games for a total of 9 1/3 innings, and has a 4.82 ERA. Last season, he posted two scoreless appearances for the Rockies in two stints.
The right-hander spent the majority of 2012 with Triple-A Colorado Springs, and was 3-4 with 12 saves and a 4.15 ERA in 49 relief appearances. He converted 12 of his first 15 save opportunities and struck out 49 with 27 walks over 60 2/3 innings pitched.
